Ken Jernstedt Airfield Airport Master Plan
The Ken Jernstedt Airfield is a General Aviation airport that is federally-obligated. This means that while the Port of Hood River owns, operates, maintains, and develops the airport and its buildings, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintains the large, aviation service elements of the airport such as the runways, taxiways, and ramp pavements. The FAA funds large Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) that ensure the airport remains safe and operational for the flying public. The Port pays a 10% share of these projects.
Because of this federal funding, the Port is obligated to follow certain guidelines and processes governing operations and development. One of these is a planning process known as a Master Plan. The process is undertaken every twenty years, with an update completed every ten years. The purpose of the process is to define the current, short-term, and long-term needs of the airport. It also addresses local planning and development changes and needs.
